Stone patios in Metro Vancouver are built using two broad material categories: natural stone (flagstone, slate, granite, limestone, travertine, and sandstone) and engineered concrete pavers (available in textures and colours that replicate natural stone at a lower price point). Each material has distinct characteristics that affect durability, maintenance, aesthetics, and cost in Vancouver's marine climate.

Natural flagstone is the most popular premium patio material in Metro Vancouver. BC quarries produce excellent flagstone varieties — Lillooet flagstone (warm grey and gold tones) and Whistler slate (blue-grey, dense, and naturally slip-resistant) are locally sourced options that reduce transportation costs and align with the region's preference for natural, West Coast materials.

Flagstone is typically laid in an irregular, fitted pattern with tight joints (dry-laid on a compacted gravel and sand base) or wet-laid on a concrete slab with mortared joints. Dry-laid flagstone is preferred in Metro Vancouver because the flexible base accommodates the soil movement common in the region's clay soils and allows rainwater to percolate through the joints rather than pooling on the surface — a significant drainage advantage in a region receiving over 1,200 mm of rain annually.

Wet-laid flagstone on a concrete slab provides a more rigid, level surface but requires proper sub-drainage and expansion joints to prevent frost heave cracking.

Concrete paver patios offer greater design versatility and price consistency than natural stone. Paver patios install over the same compacted gravel and sand base system as paver driveways, with joints filled with polymeric sand that hardens to resist weed growth, insect intrusion, and washout from Metro Vancouver's heavy rains. The modular nature of pavers allows for intricate patterns, borders, inlays, and curves that would be difficult or impossible to achieve with natural stone.

Base preparation follows the same ICPI standards as driveway installation — 6-8 inches of compacted granular base for pedestrian patios (less than vehicular applications since patios do not bear vehicle loads), 1 inch of screeded bedding sand, and geotextile fabric on clay soils.
