Retaining Walls

Retaining walls are one of the most essential hardscape elements in Metro Vancouver — a region where sloped lots are the norm, not the exception. From the steep hillsides of North Vancouver and West Vancouver to the rolling terrain of Burnaby, Coquitlam, Port Moody, and the Fraser Valley, thousands of Metro Vancouver properties require retaining walls to create usable level areas for patios, driveways, gardens, and outdoor living spaces.

A properly engineered and constructed retaining wall holds back soil, manages water drainage, prevents erosion, and transforms unusable slopes into functional terraced spaces. A poorly built retaining wall — one without adequate drainage, reinforcement, or engineering — is a liability that will lean, crack, bulge, and ultimately fail, potentially causing property damage, slope destabilization, and municipal code violations.

Interlocking concrete block (segmental retaining wall units) is the most popular retaining wall material in Metro Vancouver. Brands like Allan Block, Redi-Rock, Versa-Lok, and Barkman produce engineered block systems with built-in setback geometry (each course steps back slightly from the one below, creating a battered face that uses gravity to resist soil pressure) and mechanical interlocking features (lips, pins, or clips) that connect courses without mortar.

These systems are designed to NCMA (National Concrete Masonry Association) standards and can be engineered with geogrid reinforcement (layers of high-tensile polymer grid extending back into the retained soil) to construct walls up to 6 metres or more in height. For walls over 4 feet (1.

2 metres) in Metro Vancouver, a geotechnical engineer or structural engineer must design the wall, specifying the block type, setback angle, geogrid layers, embedment depth, drainage provisions, and foundation requirements for the specific soil conditions and surcharge loads at the site.

Natural stone retaining walls — using BC-sourced granite, basalt, or sandstone — provide a premium aesthetic that blends with West Coast landscape design. Dry-stacked natural stone walls (without mortar) are suitable for walls under 3 feet in height on stable soils and create a rustic, organic appearance that weathers beautifully over time. Mortared natural stone walls on a concrete footing provide greater structural capacity and are appropriate for taller walls, though they lack the flexibility of dry-stacked walls and may crack if the footing shifts.

Drainage is the single most critical element of any retaining wall in Metro Vancouver. With over 1,200 mm of annual rainfall, hydrostatic pressure (water pressure building up behind the wall) is the primary cause of retaining wall failure in the region.

Every retaining wall must incorporate a drainage system: perforated drain pipe (weeping tile) at the base of the wall, wrapped in filter fabric and bedded in clean gravel; a gravel drainage blanket behind the wall face extending the full height of the wall; and weep holes or drainage gaps at the wall base to allow water to exit. Without these provisions, water saturates the retained soil, dramatically increasing the lateral pressure on the wall and eventually causing failure.
