A pool deck is the functional and aesthetic centrepiece of any backyard pool installation — it defines the outdoor living space around the pool, provides safe and comfortable footing for swimmers, and must withstand the unique combination of water exposure, chlorine and salt contact, UV radiation, and heavy foot traffic that no other hardscape surface in the home endures.

In Metro Vancouver, where backyard pools are a growing luxury segment in neighbourhoods across West Vancouver, South Surrey, Langley, Richmond, and the Westside of Vancouver, the pool deck material and design must also contend with the region's 1,200+ mm of annual rainfall, 6+ months of wet conditions, and the moss and algae growth that Vancouver's mild damp climate promotes on any outdoor surface that stays wet.

Slip resistance is the paramount safety requirement for pool deck pavers. Wet pavers around a pool are a slip-and-fall hazard — particularly for children — and the paver surface must provide adequate traction when wet without being so rough that it abrades bare feet. Textured concrete pavers with a slip-resistance rating of at least 0.60 (wet coefficient of friction as measured by ASTM C1028 or the newer DCOF test) are the standard for pool decks.

Tumbled pavers (with slightly rounded edges and a roughened surface) and pavers with exposed aggregate or textured finishes provide better wet traction than smooth-faced pavers. Natural stone options — travertine (naturally porous and slip-resistant), sandstone, and granite with a flamed or bush-hammered finish — are premium pool deck choices that provide excellent traction and a sophisticated aesthetic.

Travertine is particularly popular for pool decks in Metro Vancouver because its porous structure keeps the surface cool underfoot even in direct summer sun — a comfort advantage over concrete pavers, which can become uncomfortably hot on dark colours during July and August.

Pool coping — the finished edge material that caps the pool shell at the waterline — must be coordinated with the surrounding deck for visual continuity and structural integration. Bull-nosed concrete coping, natural stone coping (travertine, granite, or bluestone), and pre-cast concrete coping are the common options in Metro Vancouver, installed over the pool beam with a slight overhang and drip edge that directs splash water back onto the deck rather than into the pool. Coping must be securely mortared and sealed to prevent water infiltration behind the pool wall.

Drainage is critical for pool decks in Metro Vancouver. The deck must slope away from the pool at a minimum 2% grade to prevent rainwater and splash water from draining back into the pool (which dilutes chemical balance and increases filtration load). A perimeter drain channel between the pool coping and the deck edge is recommended in Vancouver's climate to capture the heavy rainfall and direct it to the storm drainage system.

Base preparation follows standard ICPI guidelines — 6-8 inches of compacted granular base, 1 inch of bedding sand, and geotextile fabric on clay soils — with particular attention to compaction around the pool excavation backfill zone, which is highly susceptible to settling.
