Should I use granite or limestone treads for a Vancouver staircase?
For Vancouver staircases, granite is the superior choice over limestone due to our marine climate's persistent moisture and freeze-thaw cycles. Granite's non-porous surface, superior slip resistance when wet, and exceptional durability make it ideal for Metro Vancouver's 1,200mm+ annual rainfall.
Granite treads offer unmatched performance in Vancouver's wet conditions. Granite is virtually non-porous (less than 0.4% water absorption), meaning it won't absorb moisture that could cause freeze-thaw damage during our 5-15 annual freeze cycles. More importantly for safety, granite maintains better traction when wet compared to limestone. BC granite varieties like Gabriola Grey or imported options provide excellent slip resistance with their naturally crystalline texture. Granite treads typically run $40-$80 per linear foot installed for 2-inch thick treads, depending on width and edge finishing.
Limestone's challenges in Metro Vancouver center on its porous nature and susceptibility to weathering. Limestone absorbs 2-8% of its weight in water, and Vancouver's persistent humidity means limestone stays damp for extended periods. This creates two problems: increased freeze-thaw vulnerability (even with our mild winters) and rapid moss and algae growth on the surface. Limestone also weathers more quickly in acidic conditions, and Vancouver's rainfall has a slightly acidic pH that gradually etches limestone surfaces. The result is limestone treads that become increasingly slippery and require frequent cleaning and treatment.
For Metro Vancouver installations specifically, granite treads should be finished with a thermal (flamed) or bush-hammered surface rather than polished. Polished granite becomes dangerously slippery when wet, which is problematic given our October-through-March rainy season. The thermal finish creates a textured surface that maintains traction even during heavy rainfall. Install granite treads with a slight forward slope (1-2%) to shed water quickly rather than allowing it to pool on the surface.
Practical considerations include ensuring proper drainage behind and beneath the treads. Vancouver's clay-heavy soils in areas like Surrey, Richmond, and parts of Burnaby don't drain well, so install a gravel drainage layer beneath stone treads and ensure water from the treads drains away from the foundation. Use stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized anchoring hardware, especially for coastal properties in West Vancouver, North Vancouver, or White Rock where salt air accelerates corrosion.
Maintenance differences are significant in our climate. Granite treads require only periodic pressure washing (1,500-2,000 PSI) to remove moss and debris, typically once or twice per year. Limestone treads need more frequent cleaning, periodic sealing with a penetrating sealer, and often require moss treatment with iron sulfate-based products during the growing season.
When to hire a professional is straightforward - any staircase installation requires professional expertise for proper foundation work, precise leveling, and code compliance. Stone treads are heavy (granite treads can weigh 100-200 pounds each) and require mechanical lifting equipment and experienced stone masons for safe installation. Building permits may be required depending on the height and location of the staircase relative to property lines.
The investment difference between granite and limestone treads is typically 20-40% in favor of limestone upfront, but granite's superior longevity and reduced maintenance requirements make it more cost-effective over the 20+ year lifespan of a quality stone staircase in Metro Vancouver's challenging climate.
