For Metro Vancouver paver installations, 3/4 clear (also called 3/4 minus or road base) is the superior choice over crushed limestone for your base material. The combination of various sized aggregates in 3/4 clear creates better compaction and drainage performance in our wet climate.
3/4 clear contains a blend of aggregate sizes from 3/4 inch down to fine particles, which allows it to compact into a dense, stable base when properly installed in 2-inch lifts with a plate compactor. This gradation creates excellent load-bearing capacity while still maintaining adequate drainage — critical in Metro Vancouver where your base will see over 1,200mm of annual rainfall. The fines in the mix help lock the larger stones together, creating a solid foundation that resists shifting under traffic loads.
Crushed limestone, while excellent in drier climates, has significant drawbacks in Metro Vancouver's marine environment.
